Costa Rica isn't one destination. It's a handful of very different ones sharing a border, and knowing which one you're drawn to says a lot about what you actually need from this trip.
🌿 You want the world to go quiet : Corcovado
Primary forest, dense wildlife, very few people. No phone signal in most of it. If what you're after is genuine remoteness, not the Instagram version of it, this is the most honest answer Costa Rica has.
🌊 You want mornings that move slowly : Santa Teresa
Surf at sunrise, coffee after, nothing scheduled before noon. Santa Teresa runs on its own clock.
☁️ You want altitude and a different kind of air : Monteverde
Cloud forest changes the whole register : cooler, quieter, slower light. A shift in elevation that ends up feeling like a shift in pace too.
🌋 You want a bit of spectacle : La Fortuna
Arenal volcano, hot springs, waterfalls. The most visited corner of the country, and also the most reliably beautiful.
🏖️ You want calm, not silence : Sámara & Playa Carrillo
A long crescent bay lined with coconut palms, calm turquoise water, and almost no development. Less remote than Corcovado, less social than Santa Teresa, the middle ground.
🌴 You want nature without the crowds : Cahuita
Caribbean coast, a different Costa Rica altogether : slower, greener, far less visited. It's a 7-hour drive from the Pacific side, so this isn't a stop you add on a whim. It's a deliberate detour for travellers who have the time and want the version of the coast most visitors never see.
✨ You want to be looked after, fully : Guanacaste
Costa Rica's most polished coastline. Private beach clubs, five-star service, the version of the country built for travellers who came to be taken care of, not to rough it.
